Haleakala

10,000 foot plus extinct Volcano.

You leave Paia at 3.30 in the morning at sea level and around 75 degrees and travel 35 miles up the side of the mountain and when you get to the top u you find it hard to breath in the thin air and you are frozen by the minus temperature winds.  The sunrise makes it all worth it when you feel that you are on top of the world and you start making out the adjoining islands in the distance. Its all down hill on the way home. 35 miles of coasting. If you want to you can hire a bike and you can go 35 miles without peddling once!
