Makena

"The wild side of Maui"

We heard that there was a "South" swell coming to the islands so we looked at the map and decided to head for Makena beach. The wind blows stronger round that side of the island when it is "Kona" winds and we wanted to try some "port" tack sailing. The road is long and eventually ends at a lava flow that has covered the road. The terrain around this part of the island is extreme and very harsh with razor sharp rocks all over the bay. The waves, however,  are fantastic and the wind is strong if a little bit gusty. You cannot sail the big waves unless you know what you are doing because they break in the shaddow of a huge rock cliff and the wind is super gusty but the surf is amazing and the scenery takes your breath away. We ran in to Josh Stone whilst we was there as well as "Ricardo" and they put on quite a show for us.
